Confessions of a Nerdy Canadian

My name is Tanya and I am a Canadian. I don’t use the word “eh” and although I enjoy maple cream and maple flavoured foods, I am not a big fan of maple syrup. I like Canadian Bacon but seldom ever buy it and I have never eaten a “Beaver Tail” or drank coffee from Tim Hortons. Their lattes however, yum!

I have been in every province except for Newfoundland, which I hope to rectify over the coming years, and haven’t had the opportunity to visit the Territories. Yet.

I love our flag and our reputation for kindness, which I have witnessed across Canada, in times of tragedy and celebration. I love how we welcome people into our country and that we have such a vast and varied culture, made up of so many different heritages.

I have worked for one of the oldest companies in Canada, The Northwest Company, living in several First Nations communities in the North. I am so grateful for having had the chance to experience this rich culture and scenery. I saw pelicans, drove across ice roads and got to become a mother while living up North.

We have our share of social problems and political concerns. We have poor communities and wealth all mixed together, which was brought home for me during a visit to Vancouver where I saw a homeless man sleeping in the entryway at Tiffiany and Co. There are lots of different opinions about what needs to happen with our government and the nice thing about living in a democracy is that we can have those opinions and share them freely, and hopefully, respectfully..

Canada isn’t perfect, but I am so proud to be Canadian. We are funny and strong and we have spirit. We live in a beautiful, safe place and we are so fortunate. My name is Tanya. I am Canadian and I am grateful to call this spectacular country my home.
